David P. Sartor conducts the McGavock High School Wind Ensemble in Governor's Cup March on April 28, 2011.
Program Notes
Governor's Cup March was composed to honor Kenton J. Hull Jr.
for his long tradition of marching and concert band excellence. Mr. Hull was the
Director of Bands at Two Rivers High School from 1963-1970 and at McGavock High School
from 1971-1977. The Governor’s Cup, repeatedly won by Mr. Hull and his bands, is a trophy awarded to the
Tennessee State Champion at Middle Tennessee State University’s Contest of Champions,
the oldest consecutive-running marching band competition in the United States.
This march was premiered on July 17, 2010 at the Two Rivers and McGavock Band Reunion
at the Hotel Preston in Nashville, Tennessee by a concert band consisting of alumni from
both schools. The premiere, with Mr. Hull in attendance, was conducted by the composer.
