"A highly effective four movement work for brass quintet, somewhat austere in its emotional tone, well written for the instruments, with a welcome mix of declamatory and more linear sections, holds interest throughout. Rhythmically sophisticated, with varying colors, weights and energies, carefully controlled. The opening of the "Requiem" is a welcome contrast from the forceful energy of what has come before. Even the loud interjections here seem to grow naturally out of the calmer atmosphere. The straight ahead rhythmic intensity of the "Danse Profane" is again welcome and keeps the composition, despite its lack of evident lyricism, with good tonal variety and helps avoid tedium. A very strong ending movement."
