![]() David P. Sartor conducts the Indiana Wind Symphony in the world premiere of VISION on April 28, 2024, with turning score pages.
Vision is defined as “the ability to think about or plan the future with imagination or wisdom.” This piece was commissioned by a consortium consisting of the Indiana Wind Symphony and 12 other ensembles and musicians to honor Dr. Charles P. Conrad for his decades of vision in founding the Indiana Wind Symphony and serving as its Music Director for more than 25 years, transforming it into one of the preeminent ensembles in the nation. Cast in a single movement, Vision opens with a short fortissimo fanfare representing an initial burst of unwavering vision that serves as the impetus for the entire composition. The introductory material that follows presents an idée fixe derived from the fanfare; the idée fixe is heard throughout the work in foreground and background guises as the two main themes of the piece are presented, developed, and explored. Following the full-throated return of the second theme, a brief energetic coda restates the idée fixe in canonic fashion to complete the circle, celebrating the manifest fruition of that initial vision and bringing the work to a triumphant and exhilarating conclusion.
